But I think it's because people use software that's locking files constantly or have so many files that need to be synced and it causes issues. There have been some issues with CS syncing files for others in the past.

You also have to be careful, because it might be extremely cheap or free to backup your data, but if you want to restore it, it can be extremely expensive (these are mostly the enterprise solution, but read everything carefully). I'm cheap so I don't pay for these services. Synology added these services in DSM 5.2 (the previous version). Crashplan, Amazon Glacier, etc are cloud backup services and provide an easy way to backup your data offsite. Then rotate on-site backups with off-site backups (in case of fire/nature disaster). The right way to do backups, is to have all content on a server backed up at least daily. Also there's no scheduling of backups and I don't need to leave the PC on.

All I need to do is replace the hardware, or reinstall Windows (download other software and install it) and my files and anything I created is on the NAS.no data loss. This way if I lose a PC suddenly (virus, hardware failure, etc.) I don't loose much if anything. Then there's no reason to run backup software at the PC level. Rather than keeping files locally on the PC, I put them on the NAS and browse/use them from the NAS as needed. It's easier to manage a server and their backups instead of each PC individually. Think of your PC/laptop from a corporate perspective. You should always have a copy of Windows, whether it's a restore disc from the PC manufacturer or physical media. Instead worry about backing up the Word documents, spreadsheets, presentations, etc that you created. For example, don't worry about backing up the MS Office applications that are installed. Instead focus on backing up the content you create. I wouldn't focus on backing up a PC "image" or an exact snapshot of your PC. I'm just trying to benefit from your experience and in doing so, perhaps enlighten the next backer-upper.ĮDIT: The title question should have read "Why" do so many Synology users avoid using Cloud Station Backup?
Also, if you're a user with a similar basic backup need as mine, I'd liked to hear any positive / negative feedback. That said, before I get too far down the backup garden path, I'd rather someone stop me before I start backing up the bigger (music and video) files, if there are some legitimate concerns. I know some of this is likely child's play for many, but I'm just a home user that wants a fairly simple backup that once established, will sync and mirror. and that since your opting to image with a 3rd party application, then you may use it for incremental file back up as well? Is the main reason that these 3rd party applications do a much better job at backing up the actual (in this case Win 7) PC image?. I also get that there are users looking to backup from Synology NAS to another Synology NAS, or desiring the further reassurance of online backup (Crashplan, Amazon glacier, etc.) but why is there a propensity for users to use 3rd party clients like Acronis True Image, AOMEI Backupper, Easeus Todo Backup and others? (.the last of which I still might try). I've disabled versioning and set up my first backup of My Documents which included ebooks. With the exception of the "versioning" issue (if the default is left at 32 versions), does it really work that badly? I guess I might just have to learn the hard way. I thought getting the NAS was the one way to simplify the backup process and have peace of mind (by running RAID 1). While I get that everyone has a unique backup situation (business versus home, critical data, security, etc.), I've read through tons of "backup" posts both here within r/Synology and elsewhere on the net and was amazed at how little positive support there was for the included Cloud Station Backup software. Without delving into all of the other possibilities of a NAS, my priority was backing up files (audiobooks, ebooks, documents, music, photos, video and DAW recordings) from Win 7 64 (Home) and other shared drives to NAS. DSM 6.0 released a few days after I bought it before I really set anything up, so I just updated everything this weekend.
I didn't have a lot to spend but I was getting paranoid about eventually losing data and so I recently bought a new DS214. I spent a couple of nights consolidating and organizing folders so that the eventual backup would be more tidy.

Why do so many Synology users avoid using Cloud Station Backup?
